Fire-Eye Part 1 (Metamorphosis)
The explorer Cam Triompe arrives in the port town of Passage, where Ahnn-li rules and
becomes his guest. Jethel, called Fire Eye, lives in the forest outside of Passage with
Willowsnap the Preserver. Jethel sees one of Ahnn-li's kitchen boys throw another off a
bridge. Jethel scares him away and rescues the other. He believes the castle to be an
unhappy place and allows the boy to come with him.
Fire-Eye Part 2 (EQ2 # 1)
Geo'ka arrives at Passage. He and Ahnn-li discuss building a canal connecting the Redmist
Ocean and the Vastdeep Water. Jethel and his human friend Arro find men draining a stream
and chase them away. Ahnn-li and Geo'ka discover this and debate what to do about their
old friend Jethel (see New Blood). Ahnn-li says, "Jethel will stand aside or Jethel
will die!"
Fire-Eye Part 3 (EQ2 # 2)
Sylvie goes into the forest for flowers for her mother's grave, while searching for her
missing brother Arro. She sees a strange diseased-looking creature. Ahnessa, Ahnn-li's
wife, finds Koni and tells him to find Jethel for her, or she'll kill his dogs. He finds
Jethel, Arro, and Sylvie. Jethel says Koni will "catch" and deliver him to
Ahnessa. Chot is seen watching in the background.
Fire-Eye Part 4 (EQ2 # 3)
Ahnn-li says he'll have Jethel killed. Koni brings Jethel to the castle. Jethel tells
Ahnn-li and the other humans to stay away from the forest, beats up two of his guards, and
takes off.
Fire-Eye Part 5 (EQ2 # 4)
Sylvie becomes tired of living outdoors. Jethel decides to find them their own Father
Tree. Ahnn-li wishes to build his waterway and will make Passage the richest, most
powerful city. It gets worse for the slave boys. Koni's friend Bren is wandering the
streets. Pei-lar finds him. Jethel and the children finish preparing their father tree.
Fire-Eye Part 6 (EQ2 # 5)
Pei-lar takes Bren to a place he can stay with other children. Koni's dog Boots runs after
the strange creature from EQ#2. Ahnn-li discovers that Cam Triompe befriended elves in the
past (NB# ). He wants information or he'll harm Cam's apprentice Kibo. Ahnessa says she
worries for both Ahnn-li and Jethel. Boots comes back but she's rabid, having been bitten
by the sick creature. Chot sends to Jethel to get the children clear. He calls the dog and
breaks her neck. Chot tells Jethel he must make a balance between the future and the now.
Ahnessa tells Kibo she can save Triompe if he'll find Fire Eye for her.
Fire-Eye Part 7 (EQ2 # 6)
Kibo tells Triompe what Ahnessa said. Triompe says she's playing a game. Jethel explains
to Koni that things like dogs dying sometimes just happen for no reason. Pei-lar says Bren
is one of them now and tells him how the spirits burned her (her own version of events in
NB # ). Kibo and Cam go looking for Jethel. One of Pei-lar's children steals a sack from
Cam.
Fire-Eye Part 8 (EQ2 # 7)
Cam and Kibo look for Jethel. Cam discovers that the seed Dart gave him is missing. The
thief brings Cam's seed to Pei-lar. She believes it could be valuable to her. She sends
all but Bren out to find information on Ahnn-li and Cam Triompe. Koni goes out with Arro
and Sylvie to visit their mother's grave. They run into Bren.
Fire-Eye Interlude (EQ2 # 8)
Jethel and the children discover a strange-looking cat that seems to want them to follow.
They follow the cat to discover a large ship smashed into the rocks and broken in half.
They discover a chest filled with swords, uniforms, and books.
Fire-Eye Part 9 (EQ2 # 9)
Koni lies to Bren to keep the Holt and Jethel secret. Chot talks to Cam and makes him
promise not to betray Jethel. Bren goes into Ahnn-li's castle and asks Jooka for help. He
takes him to Ahnessa. Jethel receives a sending from Suntop giving advice.
Fire-Eye Part 10 (EQ2 # 10)
Bren has a vivid dream about Fire Eye and the other children while sleeping in Ahnn-li's
castle. In it, he dreams that Ahnessa stabs Jethel to get at his heart. Cam Triompe and
Kibo meet Chot. Bren believes that Ahnessah wants Jethel for something. Bren leaves the
castle and returns to Pei-lar. He tells her that Ahnessah believes Fire Eye can give her
immortality, and wants him to find the spirit for her. Another one of Ahnn-li's fetch-boys
is found wounded and brought to Pei-lar.
Fire-Eye Part 11 (EQ2 # 11)
Cam Triompe and Kibo are brought to Jethel's holt. Chot and Jethel have decided to trust
them. Cam tells them how bad things are getting in Passage. Ahnn-li is getting angrier
every day progress on his waterway is delayed. Cam believes Jethel and Ahnn-li should find
a middle ground. Cam goes into the city to set it up. One of Pei-lar's children and one of
Ahnessah's slaves both see him. They both run to tell their masters. Ahnn-li agrees with
Triompe and will speak to Jethel. After they depart, Ahnn-li's agreement doesn't appear
quite so sincere. Jillie tells Pei-lar she saw Cam Triompe visiting Lord Ahnn-li. She
immediately leaves. Jethel, Chot, Triompe, and Kibo return to the castle to talk to
Ahnn-li.
Fire-Eye Part 12 (EQ2 # 12)
They all meet on a balcony overlooking Passage. Ahnn-li tells Jethel that his waterway
will not affect the forest any more than necessary. Ahnessa believes that Ahnn-li plans to
kill them. But that would interfere with her own plan. She poisons Ahnn-li's drink and
tells Jooka to give it to him. Jooka knows that the blame will be placed on him, so he has
Kibo do it. While bringing it to Ahnn-li, he trips and spills it on his shoes. Ahnn-li
attacks Kibo and trips over the mug. Ahnn-li goes over the side and falls to his death.
Ahnessa immediately blames Cam and the elves. Jethel, Chot, and Kibo get away, but Cam is
caught.
Fire-Eye Part 13 (EQ2 # 13)
Jethel, Chot, and the children return to their Holt without Cam Triompe. Chot believes
Triompe will give away the location of their Holt. Jethel completely trusts Triompe.
Ahnessa has Cam locked up. Jooka runs off, afraid of what Ahnessa will do. Meanwhile,
Pei-lar wants to own Passage. Jooka finds Bren with Pei-lar. Pei-lar wants him to join
their group and must know what happened with Ahnn-li. Pei-lar figures out that Ahnessa
wants to be immortal like Jethel. So, she arranges Cam's escape. Chot again disagrees with
Jethel, Jethel provokes him and Chot attacks.
Fire-Eye Part 14 (EQ2 # 14)
Jethel and Chot work out their differences with a brawl. The Ahnessah assures the
supporters of Ahnn-Li that the project will continue. Cam Triompe is taken to Pei-lar's
cellar. She tells him she wants the forest whole and clean as well. They're both against
the Ahnessah. Jooka, taken in by Pei-lar, plans to bring this information to Ahnessah.
Jethel and Chot still believe Ahnessah has Cam. They plan a rescue. Jethel will be traded
for Cam. Koni is sent to let them know. He runs into Bren and finds out Cam is already
safe.
Fire-Eye Part 15 (EQ2 # 16)
Koni returns to the forest. Bren said the Ahnessah wants Jethel to give her his
immortality. Cam is free. They must show Ahnessah what she wants is impossible. They must
bring her here. Cam is with Pei-Lar and the kids. They want to draw Ahnessah into the
forest too. Her soldiers have found them. They head out through an escape tunnel. Cam
knocks a wall down on them. Above, Ahnessah is told of their escape. She knows they're
headed for the forest. She and Jooka will be there. Cam, Pei-Lar, and the children come
out of a drain outside the city. They head into the forest. Late into the night, they are
met by Jethel. He agrees they have a common problem. He wants Ahnessah and her ideas gone
from the forest. So does Pei-Lar. She'll do it, but she wants Jethel gone from the forest
too. He agrees.
Fire-Eye Part 16 (EQ2 # 17)
Jooka is leading the Ahnessah and soldiers to the Holt. Chot, Jethel, and the others can
hear them. Pei-lar and her group will keep them busy until Jethel is ready. They frighten
all the soldiers away. Ahnessah and Jooka are alone. They runs from Chot. They soon become
lost and seperated. Jethel confronts the Ahnessah. She wants the secret to endless life.
Jethel says he and his people never wanted to be the 'demons' humans love to hate. If
Ahnn-li hadn't threatened the forest, he'd still be alive. She still believes he can give
her eternal life. He says, "So you shall..." Ahnessah screams. She's at the foot
of the tree covered in wrapstuff. The next day Cam and Kibo are leaving in a ship. Jooka
is going with them. Jethel promises to keep his word to Pei-Lar to leave the forest. He
leaves Sylvie, Arro, and Koni in her care. He trusts her. Jethel and Chot get moving.
Fire-Eye Part 17 (EQ2 # 19)
Many days later, Jethel and Chot travel through the Forevergreen. Jethel feels like Suntop
when he sensed Door. He hears voices, singing leading him. They find humans impaled on
stone spikes. Some bodies seem pretty old. Jethel hears a sending. Humans attack. They
kill some of them, but there are too many, including a large bald one, the chief. A spear
hits the chief in the chest. Jethel and Chot run after the attacker. They cross a log
bridge to a hut, where they find Dodia. The spikes are Door's warning. She couldn't leave.
She and Door recognized. The child is safe where his father can't touch him. Chot assumes
she killed it. Jethel wants her to come along. She's angry they all left her. Door is all
around. The two elves leave. Soon, the singing is heard again. A human hut. The chief is
alive and resting. Drumbeats tell others the forest demons have returned. A panther enters
a cave. A curtain opens and an elf yells (Door?). It runs. Ancient magic, long slumbering,
begins to stir.
Fire-Eye Part 18 (EQ2 # 20)
Jethel is playing a flute on a cliff. Something isn't right about Dodia. Chot dreams he's
walking through snow. A huge polar bear breaks through the ice saying, "Come to
me." He wakes up. Jethel doesn't think Door is here. They should go back and see if
she's alright. In the village of the True People, the chief is up and ready to hunt with
Balam and his son. His wife says he's not ready and their son is too young. Demons killed
his chief-father and half their people with him. He says they must discover their
weaknesses. They'll be back. She walks back to town. A giant stone four-fingered hand is
above the road. Jethel feels another sending in a different place. It's hunger. They enter
a cave. The chief, Belam, and the boy find the road that comes to the cave. Jethel and
Chot open a door and see a chained up elf-child. Dodia finds them. In thinking she killed
her son, they heard what they wanted to. She's protecting him. Jethel says there's another
way. He and Chot will take him and keep him safe. She must stay to keep Door away. She
says goodbye. Humans are coming. Dodia runs out the entrance and they chase her. Jethel,
Chot, and the child go a different way.
Fire-Eye Part 19 (EQ2 # 21)
The day after. No-Name feels rain for the first time. Chot dreams again. He's flying a
huge bird and feels free for once. Jethel wakes him up. No-Name sees a human boat on the
water. A group of them embark on a small boat. Ge-O'ka is one of them. He finds the place
familiar. A woman says he and Ahnn-Li squandered peoples' fortunes and must recoup their
investments. They walk through the forest, led by Ge-O'ka. The woman tells three men that
if it goes badly, to kill him. Ge-o'ka remembers what happened here. Jethel finds
something familiar about it too. Upriver, a hut over the water. Inside an old man paints.
He goes out with his monkey in a boat to catch dinner.
Fire-Eye Part 20 (EQ2 # 22)
Jethel, Chot, and Noname walk through the water. They find the raised up hut on the water.
Jethel remembers it. The boy leads them inside. They see the painting the man was working
on. It's Jethel and Suntop. The man comes in. He's the Wanderer (NB 30-31). Jethel thought
the fire killed him. He hugs them man. (The final installment of Fire Eye for now)
