Lock 19 South (Portage Summit Level) - Hill's Lock
Lock 19 looking northeast into the lock chamber
About the Lock: Lock 19 sat 2.8 miles below Lock 18 on the Ohio & Erie Canal. There was any particular activity associated with Lock 19 for the most part. No town sprung up around it but the community of Glasgow was just a short distance to the north. The spillway was on the southeast side of the lock while the towpath was of course on the other side. The first time I went looking for Lock 19, I didn't find it. That's because unlike most of the remaining canal prism and locks before it, Lock 19 is on the south side of the road. The canal's route passes under US 36 to the south side of the road on its way into Newcomerstown.
Glasgow Basin
Approximate location of Glasgow Basin
About the area: Approximately 0.5 miles below Lock 19 was a fairly large sized basin called Glasgow Basin. In the 1870's, an industrialist from Glasgow, Scotland was hunting in the area and discovered a quantity of coal and iron ore. He returned to the area with some friends and attempted to start a large mining operation. They built an iron furnace that was supplied with water from the canal and basin. The project ultimately failed but the community of Glasgow remained. It is a very small community now, located just north of the area of the former basin. The canal did not pass through the town itself.
