Zoarville

Zoarville Trailhead

Location: Although not a true trailhead, the current end of the Towpath Trail is located on SR 800 just south of Zoarville. It is accessible to travelers on the CanalWay Ohio National Scenic Byway by going north from the intersection of Canal Road (Scenic Byway) with SR 800 (Scenic Byway south of the intersection).

History: Zoarville was originally known as Zoar Station as it was the railroad stop for the village of Zoar 2 miles away. It became known as Zoarville sometime in the early 20th century. Zoarville was originally located in a different location from where it sits today. It was moved to higher ground in 1930 when the Dover Dam (pictured) was constructed as part of the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District.

Distance from Canal Lands 2.6 miles
Distance to Dover 6.6 miles (approx. - not completed yet)
Facilities at the trailhead None
Attractions near the trailhead ◊ Dover Dam

Lock 11 South (Portage Summit Level) - Quarry Lock

Lock 11 South looking south with remains of a log cabin on top

About the Lock: Lock 11 is located almost 6 miles below Lock 10 on private property. The lock is in poor condition and has been used as the foundation of a log cabin that is now all but destroyed. The spillway was located on the west side of the lock while the towpath passed the lock on the east side between the canal and the Tuscarawas River. Unfortunately, I don't know much about the history of this lock.

State of the lock Lock walls crumbing but intact

Accessibility Visible from SR 800 but on private property

Lock 12 South (Portage Summit Level) - Jones Lock

About the Lock: Lock 12 is the first non-existent lock on the southern portion of the Portage Summit level since Lock 5 in Massillon. The lock was destroyed sometime after 1930 by the residents of the property because it created an inconvenience to bringing coal into the locktender's house where they lived. It was blown up and filled in but the locktender's house (yellow on the map to the left) is still standing and identifies the location of the lock. Like Lock 11 before it, the spillway passed on the west side of the lock while the towpath was on the east. The name "Jones Lock" is a mystery to me.

State of the lock Non-existent
