Location: Lock Seventeen (or just Seventeen) is located in Clay Township in Tuscarawas County, just west of Gnadenhutten on US 36.
History: A small community grew up around Lock 17 on the Ohio & Erie Canal and the mill associated with it, the Buckeye Roller Mill. For lack of a better term, the community simply became known as Lock Seventeen when the U.S. Post Office came to town. A railroad depot there also was called Lock 17. Today, because of the demise of the canal (and the destruction of Lock 17), the town is simply called Seventeen.

About the Lock: Lock 17 is no longer with us, but its location is easy to find. It lies within the town of Seventeen, named for the lock itself. The Buckeye Roller Mill has been restored and still sits in its original location on the north side of US 36. The lock sat just slightly east of the mill itself which used the water overflow in the lock's spillway for power. The canal turned west from the present day intersection of SR 416 and US 36 and the towpath was located on the south side of the lock while the spillway was to the north. Today, US 36 runs along the route of the old canal and Lock 17 was destroyed when the road was widened. After passing the Mill, the canal moved to what is now the south side of US 36.
