The Brian Rock Project
A better estimate of Brian Rocks
in the United States
In my youth, I thought I had a pretty
unique name. No, I don't. In playing with the Phoenix phonebook in
the early 1980's, I figured that there were about 50 in the US,
including one besides me in Phoenix. From time to time, I would find
out about others - one in Texas, one who spent time in Germany,
etc. There it stood until I found a web site called
www.placesnamed.com
that gives the frequencies of names for places
in the U.S. It also gives census-derived frequency figures for first
and last names in the U.S.
Brian is
actually the 20th most popular male name in the U.S., with a
frequency of 0.736%.
Rock is the
1662nd most popular last name in the U.S., at 0.008%. If we use the
July, 2001 population for the U.S. of 276,000,000, we find that
there should be 162.5 Brian Rocks in the U.S. (we'll drop the
fraction - no sense in being cruel.) By the way, Brian is also
registered as a female first name (3,582nd most popular at 0.001%);
there should be 0.02 female Brian Rocks in the U.S. Not likely,
unless somebody also has "A Boy Named Sue".
