American Goldfinch at our birdbathThe male American Goldfinch is bright yellow with black wings and cap. His tail is black with white markings. The more white markings on his tail, the older he is. Kind of like gray hair for birds! Unfortunately, they lose this bright yellow color in the winter and become a dull green/yellow.

Females are a dull olive color without the black cap. Juveniles are the same as females until about age two, when they molt and begin getting their bright yellow feathers and black caps if they are males.

American Goldfinches eat primarily thistle, sunflower, goldenrod and other seeds from the sunflower family; occasionally eats insects and berries. They are one of the most common backyard birds in Ohio and do not migrate, moving only far enough south to find food. Native plants for their survival include thistle for seeds and nest building, sunflowers and goldenrod.
