Green Heron

The male and female Green Heron have a similar appearance:  Short and stocky with a blue-green back, rusty red neck and chest and dark green crest. The male normally has yellow legs which turn bright orange during breeding season. The juvenile is similar to the adult with a blue-gray back and white-streaked chest and neck. We supsect this one to be a juvenile.

Green Heron

While this Green Heron seemed to be playful, even playing hide and seek with us, when alarmed they give an explosive, rasping "skyew" call. They sometimes look like they have no neck because they hold their head close to their body. It can be a pretty strange sight to see one of these birds fly out of a tree.

They hunt for small fish, aquatic insects and small amphibians by waiting on shore or wading silently. Green Herons have been known to place objects on the water surface to attract fish to catch.
