The male White
Breasted Nuthatch is slate gray with a white face and belly, and has a black cap and nape.
He has a long thin bill that's slightly upturned and a chestnut undertail. The female and
male are similar with a gray cap and nape. The name "Nuthatch" referrs to the
bird's habit of wedging a seed into a crevice and hacking it open
The Nuthatch's habit of hopping headfirst down tree
trunks, helps it see insects and insect eggs that birds climbing up the trunk might miss.
Their incredible climbing agility comes from an extr long hind toe that's nearly twice the
size of the front ones. Mated birds will stay with each other year-round, defending small
territories.

They are often seen in flocks with
Chickadees, Brown Creepers and Downy Woodpeckers. Nuthatches eat insects and seed, and
will visits seed and suet feeders. Herman seems to like peanuts also. |
