The Downy Woodpecker is a relatively small bird with an
all white belly and black and white spotted wings. They have a black line running through
the eyes, a short black bill, a white stripe down the back and several small black spots
along the sides of a white tail. Females and juveniles lack the red mark on the back of
the head.
The Downy Woodpecker is almost identical to the Hairy Woodpecker, but
smaller. They also have a shorter, thinner bill. They are abundant and widespread
throughout Ohio and are a non-migrator. Since fall arrived here, it would seem that
Priscilla now has a couple of suitors.

They use their stiff tail feathers
like a leg of a tripod to help brace themselves as they cling to a tree. Downy Woodpeckers
eat insects and seed. They will visit seed and suet feeders. It seems they also like
peanuts. |
