What I have come to expect of a corneal transplant

Over the years, my expectations of what a corneal transplant would accomplish have changed significantly. There have always been the risks; rejection, glaucoma, and blindness. At first I thought good vision was pretty much guaranteed with a corneal transplant as long as I didn't succumb to any of the risks. Then I came to believe that I might not have perfect vision, but could wear glasses to correct vision. Finally, thanks to resources like the National Keratoconus Foundation, the Collaborative Longitudinal Evaluation of Keratoconus, the Center for Keratoconus, and my current lens fitter and surgeon, I came to expect a corneal transplant to give me a clear cornea, which should be correctable with contacts and possibly even glasses. From what my surgeon has seen, approximately 50% can be corrected glasses; the rest usually have to be corrected with contacts, usually RGP's.
