What's In A Name?

How many people know what their name means? My first name is William and
it means, "one who conquers";. Supposedly this name is taken from the great
Norman King, William the Conqueror, hence the idea of one who conquers.
My middle name is James, with means, "One who overcomes". It is the anglo
version of Jacob: brother of Esau. So then, both my first and middle name
have the idea of one who is supposed to conquer or overcome.

When choosing names for our children, we also wanted the names to have a
meaning. We didn't want names that just sounded nice, nor did we want names
that would have a strange or undesired meaning. No one calls their child
Judas or Jezebel because these names have an undesired meaning attached to
them. One is a traitor and the other is a vile and deceitful person. So, we gave
a lot of thought to the names we would choose. One child's name means
strength and the other child's name means a crown.

When one becomes a child of God, they are given the name Christian. It
signifies one who has overcome and one who has conquered: Jesus Christ.
He overcame death and conquered sin for all of us by dying on the cross
and shedding His blood. He was the perfect sacrifice to take away sins.
So, all who come to God, through Jesus Christ, are called Christians. It
means one is a follower or disciple of Jesus Christ. There is no greater
name that one could have, and no greater title to be desired on earth!
Seek to wear it well, and honor Him whom we follow.

"Yet if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be
ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf."
