How Long Is A Day?

Do you know that there are folks who don't know the answer to the above question? With respect to God's creation of all things, there are many who cannot answer how long a day is. It used to be that folks knew the answer to that question, but with concerns about evolution, many have sought a different answer.

"And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day." (Genesis 1:31)  Is there anything in the first chapter of Genesis that suggests that a day is anything other than what God says it is: a period of time where we have an evening and a morning. There is nothing to suggest that it is other than what we know: a literal day period.

There are those who believe that since "... one day with the Lord is as a thousand years ..." (2 Peter 3:8) that they then conclude that God's usage of day in Genesis 1 is really a thousand years. Of course, the passage in second Peter is not telling us how God counts days as a thousand years, but is telling us about the nature of God's patience: he can wait a thousand years like we can wait a day. God is not affected by the passing of time, for He is Eternal.

There are others who believe that since Science shows the age of the earth to be hundreds of thousands and even millions of years older than we think, that there must be some other explanation of the days of creation. However, we need to understand that God created everything in a mature form. He did not create man and woman as babies, but as adults who could go forth and procreate (Gen. 1:28) We also need to realize that Science is not exact. They have no models to know either how things were created or what things looked like or acted like in the beginning. They have no point of reference outside of God's word, yet they seek to prove that God's word is wrong.

All we can know for sure is that God said He created all things in six days and then rested on the seventh. Let's leave what we don't know alone, and rejoice in what God has revealed to us.            [JW]
