The Right Purpose
My screw driver doesn't work very well as a hammer. My
hammer doesn't work very well as a vise-grip. And although
I have fallen asleep in my car in the past, it doesn't
work very well as a bed! All of this is to say that some
things are created for a specific use or purpose. I can
"bang" on something with my screwdriver but it will not
work as well as using my hammer, which was designed for
just that purpose. And although my car seat will recline,
it will not give you a very good night's sleep.
Jesus wants us to understand we have a purpose in this
life as we serve Him: to be examples to others. We will
serve him best when we live a life that leads others
to him. That is the Right Purpose for our lives. Jesus
said it this way: "Ye are the salt of the earth: but if
the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be
salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be
cast out and trodden underfoot of men. Ye are the light
of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid.
Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel,
but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that
are in the house." (Matthew 6:13-15)
Lights may work as bushel stands, but they were not
intended for that. People may hide their relationship
with God from others, but He did not purpose that we
do so. His purpose is for us to glorify Him, by taking
the Gospel into the whole world. To tell others the story
of His love for Mankind by Sacrificing His Son, Jesus
Christ for our sins.
Things work best when they are used for their
intended purpose. So it is also for Christians! [JW]
