Ever Changing Truth?
Ever since Pilate asked the question, ".. What is
Truth?..."
(John 18:38), men have had questions about truth. Today, it
seems like people want Truth to only be as current as today's
weather!
A recent advertisement in the local newspaper suggested that
Parents should
be teaching their children about not taking
drugs. This is great advice! However, one of the ways they
determined to
suggest the importance of teaching children was to tell us that
Truth changes
and we need to be on top of it. The advertisement contained the
following
paragraph: "Five hundred years ago, the sun was thought to
revolve around the
earth. People did not know what we know now. Truths change
...". The error in
this statement is what they believe "Truth" is.
Truth is NOT defined as what is commonly believed. Just because
many people
believed that the Earth was the center of the Universe did not
make it so.
The Sun has always been right where God established it. Just
because people
did not know that or did not believe it, did not change that.
Truth is not
relative: it does not change with each generation.
However, that is exactly what many people want.
Jesus taught that God's word is Truth, "... Thy word is
Truth." (John 17:17) People may refuse to accept God's
word, but that does not make it any less true. People may
reject a portion of God's word (refusing to believe in
Baptism as necessary for Salvation or the importance of
Repenting of Sin) but that does not change God's word.
We do need to teach our children the importance of self-
discipline and not partaking of harmful drugs which can
destroy their body. But let's not teach them that Truth is
changeable. God's word does not change, and if we refuse to
accept it, now or in the future, we will face the same
consequences that God
spoke about 2,000 years ago. [JW]
"And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptised,
and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord."
