Purpose of this web page:
This Site is here to provide a central point for information exchange for Ohio area clubs.
I've talked about doing this for a long time. Here it goes: With the number of aquarium club activities growing every year, it has become difficult to decide which to attend and which to pass on. Most of us can't afford to go to everything. Clubs are also finding it more and more difficult to put on a profitable event or retain enough active members to stay in operation. I've been in this hobby for over twenty years now, and I've seen my share of clubs rise and fall or drift to the brink of falling apart. Many times it is due to the lack of active members or one or two poorly attended events. Many clubs would be hurt badly in the financial department by a poorly attended event. Every year clubs are placing events on the same day as another club and by the time they find out, it is too late to even try to cooperate on setting new dates. Depending on how close events are, both could turn out as money losers for their clubs. This page is an effort on my part to help everyone stay informed and to hopefully keep everyone cooperating in this hobby. Remember folks, we do this hobby for fun, because we like aquarium fish, not so we can get in arguments on the weekends!
I'm going to try to keep this as unbiased as possible. Though please understand, I'm a board member of two clubs and an active member of another. So, I'll probably know about those clubs' events fairly soon after any decisions are made. That's just the way it goes. I'm not going to police anything or referee any arguments, I'm simply going to post information as I get it or as I find it. I'll list contact people and sources and those concerned about conflicts or inaccuracies will have to talk to the appropriate people about it.
I've titled this thing as "Ohio Area Clubs' etc." to cover the clubs adjacent to Ohio that we visit and who visit our events. I feel that as the tourism slogan goes: Ohio is the heart of it all! (at least as far as the tropical fish hobby is concerned) Right now there are over two dozen clubs (all species & specialty) in Ohio and very adjacent areas. I've talked to people around the country who are astounded that we can keep this many clubs alive in this small of an area. We'll have to cooperate to keep it that way. I'm limiting the scope of this site to cover aquarium clubs and activities from within an area that goes from Detroit to Erie,PA to Pittsburgh to Cinci to Indy. Also I'll list national conventions and really special events outside this area. I would like to include, besides the graphic calendars and links, a text only list to help the club editors to cut & paste a nice clean events list for their bulletins. I was in their shoes for awhile. I know it will be appreciated. I want to get a map with some hot links on it (when I figure out how). Please send other ideas for consideration.
Please send comments and constructive criticisms to the email listed below.
And by all means send me the following: your club's: email address, website address, meeting night, show & auction dates (proposed or confirmed, and I would like to know why you pick that date; 1st Sunday after 2nd Monday, etc. or closest to Washington's Birthday or whatever!)and any special events to be advertised, etc.
Thanks,
Ken
