The Purple Bamboo Institute consists of a small core group of hard working students willing to give the dedication needed to learn the art of Shaolin. The Institute grew out of the original school, Mansfield’s Hu’s Kuo Su Association, which was run by Sifu Mike Gillespie in the 1970’s and early 1980’s, and then run by Sifu Mike Wheeler, who now runs his own school.  Sifu Martin (Mr. Gillespie and Mr. Wheelers’ student) now heads the Purple Bamboo Institute.

Kung Fu takes lots of discipline, and those few who push their boundaries, enjoy the sweetness of success. We are still a small core group of dedicated students, but armed with experience, training, and connections to various instructors under Master George Ling Hu, we strive to continue to spread the knowledge that we have learned.

While the majority of our pupils study mainly for the relational health and fitness aspects of traditional Chinese martial arts, without knowledge of the Martial side, these health aspects would be lost. Self-defense, global awareness, weapons systems and forms training are integral to our studies. The martial side of the Chinese Arts teaches us calmness under pressure, relaxed, fluid movement, and most of all to utilize our most powerful weapon – our mind.

If you’ve practiced with us before, come practice with us again. Our door is open. We offer classes in traditional Kung Fu, Tai Chi Chuan, Ba Gua Chang, Qi Gong and Aikido. For more information, click here:  Purple Bamboo Programs

Tai Chi Chuan and Qi Gong classes are held each Quarter at  Ohio State University / North Central State College - Mansfield Campus.
