Lift-Off on NCR F62-6 Dark Star (click to download larger image 45KB)
Lift-Off at MTMA #2 on
an NCR F62-6 Dark Star
Rocketry was one of my earliest hobbies. Photography took its place when I got to high school. I still enjoy both. I received the AstroCam RTF for Father's Day 1998. The AstroCam is cool, but I wanted better quality photos and more than one per flight. The CR4 (camera rocket 4" diameter) was built to satisfy these criteria.

Additional criteria included: the use of existing consumer photographic equipment, low to moderate initial cost, and low per-flight cost. To keep the cost and weight down, a simple 35mm format "point & shoot" camera was to be chosen. The camera would have to be auto-wind and have to have a "hot-wireable" shutter release. The rocket body would need to be four inch diameter to fit most of the less expensive cameras and be designed to be as light as possible to allow for the weight of the camera and the use of F or G engines (I didn't want to go the HPR and LEUP route just yet).

Construction details, construction photos, and additional photos of the completed rocket can be accessed at CR4 Construction. Clicking any of the thumbnail photos will download a larger image in a new window.

Photographs taken with the CR4 have been scanned. Thumbnails can be viewed at CR4 Photo Album. On most of the pages, clicking a thumbnail will download a low-resolution image. On some of the pages, links to high- and medium-resolution images are also provided.
