Frank Lloyd Wright was associated with the Unitarian Universalist Congragation, when they asked him to design a new church after their wooden one burned down 1905. The church was built in 1906-08 at a cost of $60,000. The colors inside all relate to the dominant yellow hue. Whether gray, green, or white, the unifying yellowish hue of each casts a warm sunny glow throughout. The piers, balconies, and ceilings are tied together by thin oak strips.

The light fixtures are reminiscent of Japanese design, but their exposed electrical cord, wrapped in gold silk thread, are an early example of expressing function in an artistic way. The continuous plane of windows under the projecting roof slab are set right into the concrete to minimize the window framing and to create continuity between the inside and outside. Unity Temple continues to be owned by the congregation that originally commissioned it's design.
