The War Memorial Fountain (Peace Memorial Fountain) was designed and sculpted by Marshall Fredericks (1908-1998) in 1962. The 35 foot tall piece of art rests within a 10 1/2 foot diameter fountain. The sculpture consists of a bronze man reaching for eternal peace, and rising out of the flames of war. At the man's feet is a bronze sphere symbolizing the superstitions and legends of mankind, and contains the symbols of the zodiac.
Around the central sculpture are 4 emerald pearl granite sculptures, representing 4 geographical civilizations of the world. On the north side of the fountain, an inscription is added "For with thee is the fountain of life. In thy light shall we see light. Psalm 36 verse 9". The sculpture under went extensive restoration in 1991-1992, and has a protective coating of patina. The piece is in honor of those who gave their lives for their country.
