Avery Point Light is located at the southern tip of Connecticut University's Avery Point Campus. The light was built only as a memorial tower, but the builder wished to add a privately maintained light in the top. The request was denied since it would interfere with the New London Ledge Light to the west in the harbor. Avery Point was acquired as a Coast Guard training center in the 1940's.

The Coast Guard added a multi-lamp, low candlepower optic to the tower in 1944. The tower functioned as a symbolic representation of the Coast Guard's light keeping duties, but was never declared as an official aid to navigation. In 1967 the light was extinguished when the Coast Guard closed the center. The tower was then turned over to the State, and is in disrepair & closed to the public.
