The Five Mile Point Lighthouse is located in southern New Haven within Lighthouse Park, five miles from downtown and hence the name. The present tower is the 2nd to occupy the location. The first tower was constructed of wood in 1805 at only 30 foot high. It was replaced in 1840 with the stone tower, and increased to the 70 foot height. The keeper's quarters was built in 1845.

The colonial revival tower has no ornamentation. It is constructed of an inner brick lining with an outer stone veneer, tied together with some Connecticut brownstone blocks set at regular intervals. The interior stairs are built of wedge shaped granite slabs. The non iron staircase is unique for a fairly tall lighthouse. Southwest Ledge Light can be seen between the trees in the top photo.
