The Old Stonington Lighthouse was constructed in 1840, and is one of the oldest existing lights in Connecticut (Five Mile Point was built the same year). The light was originally built in 1823 on the west side of the harbor at Windmill Point. By 1838, the shore had eroded to within 30 feet of the light, so it was dismantled and rebuilt at it's present location. It's service ended in 1889.

In 1925, the then empty structure was sold at an auction to a private party, who donated the light to the Stonington Historical Society. The light is now a neat maritime museum, open from May-Oct. The original 6th order Fresnel lens, along with 6 rooms of artifacts are housed within. The tower is open for the public to climb, commanding an awesome view of the quaint city and harbor.
