Liston Front
Bellevue Rear Range Light is located on Cherry Island, just a few miles from downtown Wilmington on the banks of the Christina River. The 104 foot tall cast iron tower was built in 1909, being the first at this location. The light was an active aid to navigation until 2001. The island is a very large refuge landfill site for the city of Wilmington.
The landfill had reached such a height, that a new tower had to be built on the other side of the island to take over the functions of the historic tower. The light was still active during our visit in 2000, and only the foundation was complete for the new tower. We had to get special permission and sign an injury waiver to enter the property.
