Little Cumberland Island Light was built at the northern tip of the island in 1838. Previously, another lighthouse was built on the southern tip of the island in 1820. This light was moved to Florida in 1838, and became the Amelia Island Lighthouse, just over the border. The original 1820 keeper's quarters is no longer existing.

The new light was constructed of brick and given a wooden staircase inside. The stairs were later replaced with cast iron, due to dry rot deterioration. A brick oil house was added in 1890 and a boathouse in 1896. The light featured a 3rd order Fresnel lens, but was decommissioned in 1915. The keeper's quarters was destroyed in 1968.
