The Little Cumberland Island Light was constructed at the northern tip of the island in 1838. Previously, another light was built on the southern tip of the island in 1820. This light was moved south to Florida in 1838, and became the Amelia Island Lighthouse, just over the border. The 1820 keeper's quarters no longer exists.
The new light was built of brick and given a wooden staircase inside. The stairs were later replaced with cast iron, due to dry rot deterioration. A brick oil house was added in 1890 and a boathouse in 1896. The light featured a 3rd Order Fresnel lens which was removed in 1915. The keeper's quarters was recently destroyed in 1968.
