Michigan City East Pier Light was constructed in 1904. The 1858 Michigan City Lighthouse served as the main beacon for the harbor, until 1894, when the Lighthouse Board recommended that a fog signal building was required. In 1900, Congress granted the funds, and the new light was finally built in 1904, after the pier's extension was completed. A 5th order Fresnel Lens was then installed.

The older Michigan City Light was deactivated upon completion of the E. Pier Light. The lighthouse then served as the keepers quarters until 1940. The East Pier Light was framed in steel, the interior lined with brick, & the exterior encased in steel plates. The 5th order Fresnel Lens was later replaced with an Amerace plastic lens. The breakwater light was built in 1911, utilizing a plastic lens.
