The first Fort Point Light was a wooden tower built in 1836. The light was rebuilt as the existing structure in 1857. A barn was added in 1890, and the brick oil house in 1897.
A pyramidal bell tower was added in 1890 and is one of only a few still standing on the east coast, although unused today. The 1857 4th Order Fresnel lens was automated in 1988.
