Located along the outer edge of picturesque Rockland Harbor, The light is located the end of a mile long breakwater. The wall was built with many large square granite slabs, is an easy (but long) level surface to hike to the end on a calm day. Care must be taken during high tide or rough seas, since the wall sits low, and waves may crash over the top.

The lighthouse is not open to the public for climbing. The City of Rockland is raising funds presently for a possible future restoration of the structure. The square brick tower and lens room are located on the top of the opposite end of the building, and is not visible in this photo. It is difficult to see the tower from this angle, without walking up along the sides.
