The first lighthouse along Spring Point was built in 1855, offshore from what was Fort Preble at the time. The light had to be rebuilt in 1875, then the lighthouse board decided yet again to replace the tower 20 years later. Construction of the new offshore pier began in 1896. A storm damaged the cast iron plates a month later and needed to be refabricated, but the light was still completed later in the year.

The "spark plug" styled light was built with a concrete filled caisson foundation. The 54 ft. tall lighthouse has four levels plus a basement storeroom and cistern. The first level was the galley, the second was the keeper's quarters and office, the third was reserved for the assistant keeper, while the fourth level was the watchroom. In 1951, the light was dismantled and moved to the end of the new breakwater.
