The present day light was built in 1872, and is the third beacon to be located on the rocky outcropping. A large cylindrical fog signal structure was once adjacent to the 75 foot tall tower.
A 4th order Fresnel lens was initially used. The light was automated in 1963, and now utilizes a modern lens. The light is located in Portsmouth Harbor, but is within the state of Maine's waters.
