The Upper Range Front Light is one of 4 lights marking the approach into Baltimore. Channel lights are used as guides for ships approaching ports to "align" themselves in shipping lanes.
Front range lights are shorter structures, while rear range lights are tall. When a ship aligns the front range light directly in front of the rear range light, he then can proceed into the channel.
