Thomas Point

Fort Carroll was named after Charles Carroll, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. The fort is a man-made island, located in the middle of the Patapsco River. Construction began in 1847, and was briefly supervised by Robert E. Lee. The fort was only partially completed & minimally gunned for the Civil War. It later housed 3 modern coastal batteries in the early 1900s, but was abandoned after WWI. The Coast Guard briefly manned the fort during World WarII.
The Fort Carroll Lighthouse was added in 1854, and was moved around a few times during the fort's construction. It was later rebuilt in 1898. The light originally housed a 6th order Fresnel lens, but has been inactive since 1931. The island is now privately owned, with no public access. The lighthouse is on the endangered list, with very little hope of restoration. As a matter of fact, the entire island is in really sad shape. A really cute light that will sadly be gone someday soon.
