The Annisquam Lighthouse was originally built as a wooden tower in 1801, along with the existing keepers quarters. The connecting walkway was added in 1814. A 2nd wood tower was constructed to replace the original in 1851. The present day brick tower and oil house was built in 1897. The cylindrical tower walls are 4 foot thick with 33 spiral iron stairs inside to the watchroom platform.
The light is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. It has been well taken care of over the past decades, including an added protective seawall, replacement of the walkway, and a complete renovation of the keepers house. Access to the property is only by appointment, as a Coast Guard family resides in the 198 year old house. The present keeper was very friendly during our visit.
