East Chop Lighthouse stands above the East Chop cliffs and marks the eastern approach to Vineyard Haven Harbor. The area was formally known as telegraph hill, due to a signal tower located here from 1828-1853. The present day light, constructed in 1876, is the 4th beacon to occupy the location. Previous wooden lights were erected in 1853, 1869, and 1872.

The light is a standard 40 foot tall cast iron structure, similar to many others of the era. The gothic revival styled keeper's quarters and oil house were removed in 1934, and the beacon automated. The light was originally painted red, but later became a chocolate brown due to a paint mix-up. The existing color began during a 1989 rehab and repair of the light.
