The Edgartown Lighthouse is believed to be the 3rd light in Edgartown Harbor. The 2nd light, built in 1828, was deteriorating badly when a storm finally destroyed it in 1938. The present light was originally the Essex Range Light, located at Cranes Beach in Ipswich, Ma. In 1939, the light was dismantled and barged to Edgartown as the replacement.
The Edgartown Lighthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Place. The Light and adjacent beach area were badly vandalized in 1991. During 3 different break-ins, all the glass windows were broken. From 1992-1995, the light was completely refurbished, along with the repair of the causeway to the light and culvert (in time for our first visit!).
