Gay Head Light stands above the 100 ft. high red clay cliffs along the southwest corner of the island. It was built to warn mariners off the Devil's Bridge rocks to the south.
The light was refitted with a 1st order Fresnel lens in 1856, which had been displayed at the World's Fair in Paris prior to shipment. The station buildings have been removed.
