Highland (Cape Cod) Lighthouse is located along the Cape Cod National Seashore east of North Truro. The present lighthouse was built in 1857, replacing a shorter light in danger of falling over the ever eroding cliffs. The tower was fitted with a 1st order Fresnel lens. When the oil lamps were converted to electric in 1932, the beacon was increased to a powerful 4,000,000 candle power, becoming one of the most powerful lights on the east coast.

The sandy cliffs have been gradually eroding throughout the life of the station. By early 1996, the lighthouse was precariously positioned only 30 ft. from the edge when funds were finally completed to move the lightstation 450 ft. inland. We visited the light in 1995 before the historic move, and again in 1997 after it's relocation. I snapped this photograph in the fall of '97 after the relocation, but work was still being finalized on the structure.
