Fort Pickering Light is located within the Winter Island Marine Recreation Area. The 28 foot tall light was built in 1871 of brick, with a painted cast iron sheathing. The light was decommissioned in 1897, due to Salem's decline as an international shipping port.
The beacon was relit in 1983, and is presently automated utilizing a solar powered battery system. The keeper's quarters, oil house and other outbuildings were destroyed long ago. The lighthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
