Fort Pickering Light is located within the Winter Island Marine Recreation Area. The 28 foot tall light was built in 1871 of brick, with a painted cast iron sheathing. The light was decommissioned in 1897, due to Salem's decline as an international shipping and whaling port.

The beacon was relit in 1983, and is presently automated utilizing a solar powered battery system.The keeper's quarters, oil house and other outbuildings were destroyed long ago. The lighthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
