The Frankfort North Breakwater Light was built in 1932, replacing the original light from 1873. The tower design is a bit unique from other Lake Michigan pier lights. It was built as a 67 foot tall simple steel rectangular box, with a door part way up the eastern elevation. This suggests that at one time an elevated catwalk may have been proposed to connect the light to the shore, similar to other catwalks in the area, but was never built.

The lighthouse is still an active aid to navigation. The breakwater is open to the public to walk or fish upon, but the seas are consistantly sweeping over the low walkway in windy and rough weather, so extreme caution must be taken. We reached the light later in the day as the sun began to lower in the sky. It was a clear summer day and the lake was calm, so we were able to make the trek out to the light. A few dedicated fisherman still remained.
