The Grand Island East Channel Light was constructed in 1868, along with a pair of range lights on the main shore. The lighthouse was located on the south side of the island to guide ships into Grand Island Bay. Another light was built a few years earlier on the north side of the island. The lighthouse was replaced in 1908 by a new set of range lights in Munising, and was later abandoned in 1913.

The structure deteriorated through decades of disrepair, now tetering on the edge of destruction. A few years ago, a private group of local citizens repaired most of the damaged foundation, and added structural cables within the dwelling. A new protective crib wall was being added in front of the structure when I snapped this photo. Don't know if this beauty will survive much longer.
