Grand Marais Rear Range Light was built in 1898, three years after the front range light was completed. The lights are still active aids to navigation to help guide ships into West Bay, the only protective harbor between Munising and Whitefish Point. The bay is shallower these days though.

The two story brick keeper's quarters is now a maritime museum highlighting the history of the lights and shipping through the years. It is ran by the Grand Marais Historical Society. The USCG Life Saving Station is also the reception center for the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.
