Old Mackinac Point

McGulpin's Point Light was built in 1869 as an aid to navigation for ships entering the Straits of Mackinac from Lake Michigan. St. Helena Island Light marked the north- western edge of the straits, while McGulpins Point Light marked the southwestern edge. The octaganal brick tower with attached support buttresses and keeper's quarters is very similar in design to Lake Michigan's White River Lighthouse. (See Michigan: West)
In 1892, Old Mackinac Light was built a few miles to the east to help navigate mariners entering the straits from Lake Huron. McGulpin's Point was deemed unnnecessary and was deactivated in 1906. The lantern room was later removed, & the keeper's quarters converted into a private residence. The light is located 3 miles from Fort Michilimackinac and downtown Mackinaw City, but is hidden down a small dirt road and behind trees.
