The first lighthouse in Muskegon was built in 1852, and later rebuilt in 1871. The original lights were simple beacons attached to the top of the keeper's house. By the turn of the century, the Lighthouse Board finally decided to build a new tower at the end of the south pier. The cast iron lighthouse was completed in 1903, utilizing a 4th Order Fresnel lens.

The 53 ft. tall light is located at the west end of the south pier. At the east end of the pier is the Muskegon U.S. Coast Guard Station. The light is an active aid to navigation, & therefore not open to the public to climb. Access to the pier is by permission through the Coast Guard. The small light in the distance of this photo is the Muskegon S. Breakwater Light.
