Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse is located on the northern edge of Mackinaw City, adjacent to the southern end of the Mackinac Bridge. The present lighthouse was constructed in 1892 to aid McGulpins Point and St. Helena Island Lights during the growing commercial traffic in the Straits. The light became obsolete after the completion of the Mackinaw bridge in 1957, and was converted into a museum.
We also chartered a private boat from Mackinaw City to visit the St. Helena and Round Island lights up close. The charter boat allowed us to experience an interesting perspective of the lighthouse from a mariner's viewpoint, as well as a close up inspection under the "Mighty Mac" bridge. The city was a finalist for the proposed National Lighthouse Museum in 1998, but Staten Island, NY was chosen.
