Congress appropriated funds for the Port Sanilac Light in 1884. The lighthouse, brick keepers quarters, and out-buildings were completed in 1886. The brick octagon tower is very unique, which tapers from 14 foot wide at the base to 9 foot wide at the parapet. The lighthouse is still an active aid to navigation, which throws a beam 16 miles out into Lake Huron.

The lighthouse & property are not open to the public to tour due to a private residence now occupying the keepers quarters. Located due north of Lexington, Port Sanilac is becoming a haven for tourists. A small parking area and public pier is located at the south side of the property for public viewing of the light. Visiting in the morning is the best time for photos.
