Congress appropriated funds for Port Sanilac Light in 1884. The lighthouse, brick keepers quarters, and out-buildings were completed in 1886. The brick octagon tower is very unique, which tapers from 14 foot wide at the base to 9 foot wide at the parapet. The lighthouse is still an active aid to navigation, which throws a beam 16 miles out into Lake Huron.

The lighthouse & property are not open to the public to tour due to a private residence now occupying the keepers quarters. Located due north of Lexington, Port Sanilac is becoming a haven for tourists. A small parking area & public pier is located south of the property for public viewing of the light. Visiting in the morning is the best time for photos.
