The Manning Memorial Light is Michigan's newest, built in 1991 as a memorial to Mr. Manning. Robert was a fisherman and lifelong resident of Empire, who joked that a lighthouse would sure help him return to port each night. When he passed away in 1989 at the age of 62, his family knew a light in his name would be the perfect way to honor him.

Manning's family, along with other local residents, compiled the necessary funds to actually turn his lifelong dream into reality. The active light is built of wood, with a white stucco finish & gray stained windows. The Coast Guard has considered adding the lighthouse to it's nautical charts. Empire is located in Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.
