Round Island Lighthouse is located at the northern skinny tip of a small island next to Mackinac Island. Passageway between the two were avoided by ships, due to the dangerous shoals, until the light was built in 1895. When the light was abandoned in 1945, high waters gradually washed away the base of the foundation, opening up a large gaping hole in the side of the structure.

Private historical societies, along with state and federal agencies, restored the lightstation by 1978 to its former integrity. During the summer the lighthouse is passed by hundreds of tourists daily on the ferry between Mackinaw City and Mackinac Island. We chartered a private boat on a warm summer day in 1998 for a close up view of the light, as well as two other lighthouses along the Straits.
