St. Joseph was the 1st light on the west coast of Michigan. The light was built in 1832 on a bluff overlooking the lake. A wooden pier & 2nd light was later built in 1859.
The steel lights existing today were built in 1907, when the pier was extended and a 900 ft. long catwalk added. The lights are still active, with original Fresnel lenses intact.
